Practicing a Collaborative Consideration and Selection Process for Augmentative/Alternative Communication (and beyond!)
Individualized Education Program teams have the responsibility to consider technology necessary to ensure a free appropriate public education. When unsure what to implement, teams often request an Augmentative/Alternative Communication or Assistive Technology Evaluation. The evaluation is conducted by one individual who generates a report with recommendations for the IEP team to consider as accommodations on the IEP. This process has led to a queue of evaluations resulting in implementation delays, inconsistent buy-in or investment in how the intervention will improve learning, and reliance on an outside individual for suggestions rather than building team capacity. There is a more collaborative, expeditious, cohesive method for considering the implementation of technology for individual learners. Learn a process where the entire team considers least restrictive options that results in aligned perspectives, timely interventions, documented justifications, and improved outcomes for learners.
Simple Shifts for Providing Accessible Materials to Everyone
The new U.S. Department of Justice Title II rule makes digital accessibility a clear, enforceable expectation for public schools, raising the urgency to ensure online materials are usable by everyone. This session helps participants build an accessibility-first practice that improves clarity, navigation, and learning outcomes for all students.
Participants will learn how to use accessibility checkers as built-in tutorials for WCAG 2.1 AA which turns each flagged issue into a practical skill for creating stronger, more usable materials. Participants will also discuss designing support systems for the entire school division. This includes developing repeatable routines for onboarding new software and other resources, establishing a structure for ongoing professional learning, and embedding accessibility into existing workflows so it becomes the default for everyone, not a special project. Leave with a clear plan for strengthening your own materials and a scalable approach for building an accessibility-first culture across a school, department, or entire district aligned with Title II requirements and focused on better experiences for every learner.
